Singers bring inspirational performance to assembly

Amari Ebbin

From time to time, we at Sandys have guests during our regular Monday or Friday assemblies. Monday, March 14 was one of those special days, when the Kuumba Singers of Harvard University came and sang for us. After they had sung a few songs in Swahili, they also performed some Gospel numbers and kept both teachers and students well entertained. Between their selections, they answered questions about Harvard and about themselves, stressing the hard work required to get into Harvard and remain there and telling us that the members of the choir, some of whom had never sung before joining the group, came from at least 12 different countries around the world.I found this particular assembly very informational. It inspired me and, I believe, many other students to know that we can do anything. Although I do not normally like watching people sing, I thought that the Kuumba Singers are very good at what they do and they certainly kept me focused during their performance. I would gladly listen to them again. In my opinion, this assembly was the best so far during this school year. In addition to the Kuumba Singers, I appreciated the director of the group, who was funny and creative, especially in the way that he gets them to be quiet when he wants to make an announcement: he shouts one Swahili word, the choir members respond with another word and then there is instant silence. Lastly, I really liked the drummer, who played his instrument very, very well.
