Somerset Primary goes green

Go green: Somerset Primary recently celebrated our green Earth with a presentation on honey bees, ‘green’ grub day and planting trees and shrubs on the school grounds.

GO GREEN! Somerset Primary went ‘green’ on Thursday, March 24, 2011. We celebrated in three ways: a presentation, a green grub day, and a tree planting ceremony. We all got to wear play clothes to school. They were green or earth tones to represent the green environment. We had a presentation by beekeeper, Mr. Tommy Sinclair, about our school mascot, the bee. P6 teacher and science coordinator, Mrs. Lisa Siese, arranged for all the grade levels to learn about pollination and the bee’s life cycle. We also learned about drones, the worker bees, and the queen bee, and about beehives. The beekeeper told us all about bees and we learned a lot. Bees help keep our planet green because they help many plants to grow. That was in the morning. In the afternoon, we had a tree-planting ceremony. Deputy principal, Ms. C. Renee Heyliger organized tree planting for each year group, as a culminating activity We planted shrubs and a palm tree. The palm tree is just outside the office, and it looks pretty. Other plants were placed outside the Infant Block staff room window and on the school’s perimeter. The plants will help our environment stay green. The Tulo Valley Plant Nursery provided the plants for us.We also talked about things we could do to celebrate Earth Hour on Saturday, like eating dinner with candles and playing board games.Student assessment of the day was that “It was the best day ever.”And as Miss. Heyliger pointed out, “This was our first Go Green Day, but there is definite interest in it not being our last.”
