Determination ensures victory for ‘rocking’ Eagles

Eagles soar: The Eagles, Clearwater Middle School's girls' basket ball team , flew to the top of the league with their defeat of Whitney Institute at the recent championship tournament.

Clearwater Eagles soared to the sky as they won the Girls’ Middle School Basketball Championship on March 25.It was 2.30pm. The place the gymnasium at CedarBridge Academy. We were in the final of the Girls’ Middle School Basketball Championship against our rivals Whitney Institute. The seconds were ticking away, and Whitney were throwing everything they had at us. They had beaten us in the final the previous year, and we were determined that there would be no repeat. The seconds seemed like hours, and Whitney were storming towards us. Suddenly the buzzer went. The packed house went wild, almost like a Boston Celtics game! We had won the championship by a score of 18-15. We hugged each other in relief as our parents and teachers raised the roof with their cheers. What an end to the season! Our coach Mrs Zina Francis Smith had always told us that we were the best team in the league, but we knew that there was some fine-tuning to be taken care of as the season progressed. Our team Asante Chapman, captain, Kalasia Bowen, Kyesja Hypolite, Cheyenne McCallan, Amali Smith and Azaire Smith, Keyanna Tweed, Deonae Jones, Alea Whorms and Chanara Smith-Rookes had what it takes. However, we were always worried about our shooting. This was evident in many of our games. Our strong point was always defence, however, and this often carried us through against other teams. One thing we had this season was a determination to win. We worked really hard to get to the finals, winning some games by as many as 32 points. We played hard and we played fast and we were always determined to win. Some of the highlights in this memorable year included: Amali and Asante’s three-point baskets; Cheyenne’s first free throw basket in the championship game at CedarBridge which turned the game towards us and gave us the first scent of victory; Asante’s winning basket in that same game; Azaire’s and Asante’s outstanding defending in every game as if they had magic hands keeping our opponents from completing their passes; Kalasia’s winning basket in the last minute of the fourth quarter in our semi-final game against Warwick Academy another memorable evening on our march towards victory; Asante being awarded MVP. She really deserved it.We also made sure that we did our “Lady Eagles Shuffle” before the fourth quarter of every game: we would huddle and chant “We’re rocking Eagles!” over and over again!Clearwater Eagles are already looking forward to being champions again next year!
