Eighty five make the cut for Bermuda Glee
One hundred students from all over the island went to audition for Bermuda Glee on April 15, and 85 students were accepted.Bermuda Glee has been planned as an intensive ten-day summer programme for talented young singers, actors and dancers. The auditions were tough; many students wanted to have a chance to shine on stage.Nerves were running high during the week the audition was held. One particular student, Sierra Symonds, found time in her busy schedule to inform Young Observer about her audition.“Before the audition I was super nervous, but I felt ready to perform at the same time because I practised a lot. Nothing more than my love affair with singing inspired me to audition for Glee,” said Sierra “During the audition I just focused on enjoying singing. I’m not so sure what I expected. I just hoped for the best. There was nothing that I expected to happen, but what I didn’t expect was for them to videotape our audition which only added to my nervousness.”“There was a good atmosphere at the auditions, everybody was supportive even the competitors, we all wished each other luck.”The judges were John Woolridge, Dr. Jimmy Lee Brown, Mary Faulkenberry and Gita Blakeney Saltus, though Sierra did not remember the names of the judges beyond Dr. Brown, who was her teacher.“If I make it then I will do my best and learn as much as I can from the experience,” Sierra said, philosophically. “But if not, then I’ll just hope another opportunity turns up and learn from any mistakes I make. I get my support from my family and friends,” she continued. “I can always depend on them to be there for me, when I need them.”Wendy Davis-Johnson, speaking on behalf of Glee presenters The Argo Foundation said: “The students came well prepared. Their energy and enthusiasm was contagious and everyone working on the auditions felt inspired by their commitment. There’s some impressive talent among these students.“We hope everyone will mark Sunday, July 10 as the date when they can see the students perform,” continued Mrs Davis-Johnson.If the atmosphere at the auditions is anything to go by, those selected will have a great time in July. No one person had to stick it out alone because everyone lent his or her support to each other. “It was like one big temporary family,” stated Sierra.Bermuda Glee is being presented by The Argo Foundation with support from The Orbis Foundation and Digicel Bermuda. Digicel is also sponsoring an InTunes initiative in which the Bermuda Glee students will compose an original song (to be premiered on Sunday, July 10) that will become an InTune, available for download from Digicel.
