CBA head prefects find role rewarding

CedarBridge Academy 2011-2012 Head Prefects Chiamo Knight (left) and Leanna Hall

The joy of seeing students come to school is what gets the current CedarBridge Academy Head Boy up in the mornings and that’s not just for Brownie points. He really does enjoy greeting his fellow students as they arrive. In fact Chiamo Knight, who went to Francis Patton Primary and Clearwater Middle School, is always the first one at school.“I’m here before the principal,” he stated, explaining that he uses the time between 7.30am and 8.30am to “ready myself, get prepared for the day. I sort through the books in my locker I listen to a little music while I’m doing it and try to memorise my schedule.”And then he’s out to greet his fellow pupils at the school gate. He finds satisfaction in knowing that there are students who look up to him.“It gives you a sense of pride,” Chiamo explained. “There’s never a miserable face. It’s always smiles and ‘Good mornings’. Some students ask for help with things school rules, teachers, school work.”For his fellow head prefect, Head Girl Leanna Hall, the role is also rewarding, despite its challenges. The biggest reward for the former Southampton Glebe and Sandys Secondary student is “the exposure I get within the community, at the various schools, the people you get to meet, the chance you get to represent your school.”Those opportunities also create Leanna’s biggest challenge in her new role time management, staying on top of her school work with all the extra activities she has to do on top of the academics, college courses and extra-curricular activities. Some of the ‘extra activities’ have included being part of the selection committee for the Victor Scott Primary School Head Boy and Head Girl, and attending the subsequent prefect induction ceremony, attending the ‘quite interesting’ convening of Parliament and helping with open house tours for visiting middle school students.“It’s not like I regret any of those opportunities,” Leanna hastened to add, “because they were worth it.”Leanna enjoys English, and, having passed her College Placement Test early, was selected to attend freshman courses at the Bermuda College with some of her classmates.English is also Chiamo’s favourite subject. “I love to write poetry,” he explained, “and I love to write essays as well.”A self-confessed football fanatic, Leanna is also active in her church, Calvary Gospel Chapel. “God takes up a lot of time in my life,” she added.Chiamo also enjoys sports, bowling at the Warwick Lanes and training for next year’s CARIFTA games in shot put and discus.Describing himself as ‘confident’, Chiamo is looking forward to a career in graphic design. Leanna, on the other hand, has her sights on becoming a secondary schoolteacher specialising in English, History or Art, and sees her key qualities as endurance and determination.
