Creating windows on the world
BHS held their first ever International Day on November 18. The project was designed to increase the students’ awareness of the Millennium Goals and how they are progressing around the world. As the excitement mounted, each class was assigned a country, and targets of the goals to research. The students learned key information on how different countries all around the world are progressing with these goals, which include ending poverty and hunger, universal education, gender equality, child health, maternal health, combating HIV/AIDs, environmental sustainability and global partnership. With recycled materials secondary students decorated classrooms and uniquely portrayed their findings, while other students toured each other’s classrooms, grading the different countries on how well the millennium goals have been reached. The IB students were assigned to a primary classroom and spent the morning reading to them and helping out their teachers before taking the students on a tour of the classrooms. In the afternoon the secondary students and IB students gathered a primary ‘buddy’ and went on a scavenger hunt for information in the different countries. One classroom, the wonderfully decorated Italy, boasted 99.3% percentage completion of their goal for primary education. Iran also advertised the extremely low rate of Internet users in their country.Italy not only captured students’ attention with great information but a shockingly accurate representation of Mount Vesuvius, complete with a hidden fan to give the effect of an eruption. The most creatively decorated classroom however was neither of these two; rather it was Ecuador, where real leaves littered the room and there was a place to have your photo taken. Even a waterfall decorated one corner and computers playing slideshows of the millennium goal results on the other side.Bolivia also put up a good contest, what with toy snakes hanging around people’s necks, green confetti vines dangling from the ceiling, and a waterfall.Looks were not everything however, as Peru contained an expertly designed slide show with detailed information and intriguing diagrams.Belgium however opted for a set of posters and a skilfully crafted clay model of a Belgian home to portray their findings to the other students. The International Day, organised by the student leaders was hailed a success by teachers and students a fun learning experience.
