Peter Pan production prepares to fly

Yohoho: ?Pirates? are pitch-perfect during a rehearsal for the BHS production of Peter Pan to be staged next March.

In 2012, “Peter Pan”, a magical adventure story written by Scottish novelist and playwright, J.M. Barrie, comes to the stage of Bermuda High School on March 7. The play has a cast of 47 plus seven band members of the secondary department from years 7-IB2.The director of production, Mrs Thorpe, said the choice was made after, “The Drama Club shortlisted several musicals and plays. ‘Peter Pan’ was on the list. I contacted the playwright’s agent. They were very helpful and enthusiastic and that helped make the decision easier. It is a musical that caters to our acting, singing, dancing and musical talents. It seemed the perfect choice!”“The Drama Club was very excited when we announced we had made our decision,” said Mrs Thorpe. “I always love working on school productions. I enjoy working with so many different students of different ages, outside of the classroom setting. I enjoy being creative and watching the play grow from a rough rehearsal to full production. Watching the acting, dancing, singing, band, set design, costumes and everything else go into a production, grow. I enjoy watch the actors grow, in particular. With this particular production I am most excited (and maybe nervous) about how I am going to make them fly!”The role of Peter Pan, a mischievous little boy who refuses to grow up, will be played by Emma O’Donnell, a Year 8 student. “I have always loved Peter Pan because he is so fun-loving and adventurous he seems as though he has no fears. He is a boy who never has to grow up or go to school. It would be awesome to be him, free, adventurous and cheeky. I am super excited about FLYING!”Peter Pan brings Wendy and her two brothers to Neverland for the adventure of their lives. Wendy will be played by Meghan Ward, a Year 9 student who said of her role, “The most interesting thing about my character is her sense of adventure; she is really adventurous. Wendy is a character who throughout the play has very adventurous experiences. I cannot relate to her adventures in Neverland, but I can relate to her sense for responsibility. She has two younger siblings whom she takes care of, as do I. The most exciting activity my character participates in would definitely be flying! She gets to fly all around the island.”The play is filled with elaborate decorations, music, and dancing. You will not want to miss this show-stopping performance.
