Somerset Primary’s sports day was on March 7, 2012. The weather was partly cloudy, and the air temperature varied from cold to warm, but our school’s temperature was hot, hot, hot. We ran, we cheered, we shouted … we really enjoyed our day. This year, in the clash of houses, Finlay-Patterson came out on top, but in reality every student who participated was a winner.Do you know what the word “house” means? A house is not a building in sports, it is like a team. We have two houses at Somerset Primary School. One house is Finlay-Patterson and another is Gilbert-Richards. The houses are named after former school principals and educators from the West end. Each house has colours. Finlay-Patterson has red and blue. Gilbert-Richards has green and yellow. Each house has house captains. The captains are students from Primary Six. During sports day, the houses clash to see which team can earn the most points.Ms Heyliger and Mr Campbell organised the races. Here are some events: 100 metres, 200 metres, 400 metres, 800 metres, and 1500 metres. I ran in the 200 metres and came first. I also ran in the 100 metres, which was won by Ronae Joyiens. We saw everyone (including the parents) running in the races, and on the previous day students had competed in the field events like ball throw.Each year we sell different foods. We had beef patties and yummy baked goodies. These items were sold to raise money for our Primary 6 School leaving ceremony.I was glad it was sports day because I got to run and see everyone else participate. I think it is participation that is important. You want your house to win, and every point counts. I was also glad because it gives students who are not good with their schoolwork the chance to show off.
