Medals galore for Island’s Special Olympians
Twenty-three gold, five silver, seven bronze and three fourth place recognitions was the total medal haul of CedarBridge Academy athletes at the recent Special Olympics held in Newark, Delaware. The Special Olympic team from CedarBridge Academy attended the region of Delaware Special Olympics held at the University of Delaware stadium, from June 8 to June 10, 2012.“There are two days of all sorts of events. Every sport you can think of, soccer, basketball, swimming, track and field,” said Alicia Zuill, Programme Director for Special Olympics.“The students were complimented by everyone because they were well behaved, they had a positive attitude, they were friendly and displayed great manners,” Ms Zuill said. “They also had a chance to meet other athletes who participated, and they were well accepted.”Every sports day, several students from around the island participate in the Special Events with Functional Skills students at CedarBridge Academy. The results of these games are sent to the Special Olympic Committee in Delaware, and every June since 2005 students from CedarBridge Academy have attended the Special Olympic games held there.“We have invited other schools to come; however, they have not be able to attend,” said Alicia Zuill. “About two years ago, Hope Academy students came with us, but for the most part, it is only CedarBridge Academy students who take part.”Ms Zuill, a para-educator at CedarBridge Academy and the organiser for the games, Mr Ricky Watts, a physical education teacher, sports coordinator and the adaptive PE instructor, and Mrs Ralda Jones, a special education teacher, all had to take online courses to qualify as coaches and volunteers in order to take students to the Delaware Special Olympics games. The certification lasts for three years.“I would like to thank the principal of CedarBridge Academy, Mrs Kalmar Richards, for allowing us to go, especially as we do not have a Special Olympics Bermuda that operates at this moment. That is why we go, as a school, to Delaware,” said Ms Zuill. “We have sponsors and parents who support us as well.”These are the final results for the two days of eventsShakino CannSoft ball - gold4 x 100m relay - gold100m dash - gold200m run - bronzeKacy Darrell25m Walk - gold50m walk - bronze15m walk - gold10m walk - goldFabio DeFrias4 x 100m relay - gold100m dash 4th place ribbon50m dash - bronze25m dash - goldKirk Dill100m walk - bronze50m dash - bronze25m dash - goldDel-Che Landy800m run - gold4 x 100m relay - gold400m run - gold200m run - 4th place ribbonBridget Marshall200m walk - goldSoftball throw - silver100m walk - goldMahalia Maynard25m dash - gold50m dash - bronze200m walk - goldJustin Smith400m walk - gold50m Dash - 4th place ribbon4 x 100m relay - goldChristopher Talbot100m walk - goldSoftball throw - bronze50m walk - silverShaqune Whitehurst25m walk - gold50m walk - gold100m walk - goldDelton WoodsShot put - gold4 x 100m relay - gold100m dash - bronze200m run - bronze
