Hospitality Institute’s programme expands in public schools

A pilot hospitality programme for Bermuda’s schools is being introduced to additional schools after early success. The Hospitality school programme, developed by the Bermuda Hospitality Institute (BHI) and run by volunteers, was first introduced in February in seven schools. However this coming school year, the programme will be expanded to run in 14 Primary and Middle Schools across the Island.Through the programme, more than three-dozen hospitality professionals have taught lessons on subjects such as Bermuda pride, manners and hospitality, standards and ethics, dining and etiquette and interconnecting careers. As a result of the project’s coming expansion, the BHI has launched a campaign intended to showcase current volunteers and recruit new volunteers to take part in the programme.BHI CEO Karla Lacey said: “Hospitality professionals make great volunteers and role models, no matter their age, position, or if they have retired.“All who have taken part report that they have gained more than they’ve had to give, and our young people are the beneficiaries of their combined and collective wisdom.”Among those highlighted in the campaign are Fairmont Hamilton Princess general manager Len Czarnecki, Royal Palms manager Sonia Whitter, Riddell’s Bay Golf and Country Club general manager Dennis Paul and executive chef and restaurant owner Livo Ferigo. All praised the programme, with Mr Czarnecki saying: “This opportunity to spark an interest in our youth is one great way to build awareness within our next generation.“It was certainly rewarding to see the energy, enthusiasm and interest of some of our youth.”Useful website: www.bhi.bm.
