The Youth Library celebrated the success of their summer reading programme with a party at the Botanical Gardens.Roughly 24 children — half of the total involved in the programme — were treated to an afternoon of snacks and games on the South lawn. The celebration was meant to commend the children who completed either level one or level two of the reading series. Level one readers read a total of 13 books over the summer; level two readers read a total of 23.Library circulation supervisor Nicole DuPonte said: “This is the final cap-off event for our summer reading programme. Today is just about celebrating the fact that these guys did a lot of reading and worked really hard. It’s not an easy thing because they were reading all around the library, outside their comfort zones. They had to read a biography, a poetry book, they had to read non-fiction, they had to read a mythology book — all sorts of stuff.”Marla Smith, the head of the Youth Library, was equally pleased.“We were quite pleased with the number of kids that actually completed and committed to finishing the programme. Most kids did the two levels, they didn’t just stick to the first level. They went beyond and challenged themselves. So we were very pleased with that and they were rewarded for it.”Eight-year-old Gianna Luparelli was the first to complete the two-level programme, reading an average of four books a night over the six-week period. When the star reader was asked whether she enjoyed the programme, she replied: “Yes I did, because I really do like reading.”
