My thoughts on youth and social media

Social Media like many aspects of life can be positive and negative. In my opinion with the invention of social media we have become closer to each other.A student in Bermuda can have a friend in China, with whom they only communicate on Twitter. For example, I have a pen pal who lives in Jamaica who I communicate with on Facebook and have never met in person. That said, as we become closer with other young people and around the world, we share our stories, I realise we can also open ourselves up to predators.I believe as youth we sometimes feel as we are experts on social media.Yet for every positive there is a negative in technology. In my opinion the negatives include the lack of filters and guidance online. My peers often find themselves confronted with challenges and serious life choices to make on line.Often I think we are unequipped for these challenges and potential threats.Online I don’t think we can see the dangers we face as well as we can in person.I believe the youth must receive education from teachers in schools as well as parents. We need to learn the necessary morals and ethics on how to survive online. In closing I believe as students we need to take more responsibility on line as do the adults in our community.
