Saltus students raised more than $1,200 for the Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Trust’s “Why It Matters” campaign

This year the theme at Saltus Grammar School is ‘Lend a Hand,’ and the Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Trust (BHCT) is one of several charities for which students have been raising funds. The Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Trust launched a three-year $40 million capital campaign ‘Why it Matters’ in support of the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital redevelopment project.

With the assistance of Mrs Aisling Foote (S9 Year Coordinator, Academic Support Coordinator and Secondary English Teacher), S9 and SGY1 students formed a Helping Hands Committee and took on the BHCT’s ‘Classroom Challenge’ of turning $100 into $1,000. Students organised a successful Bake Sale and Advisory Display Competition, and ended up exceeding the challenge.

Laura Lyons, community development officer with the Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Trust, came to a S9 assembly and explained the importance of the ‘Why It Matters’ campaign. She informed the students that, so far, the people of Bermuda have raised $30 million of the $40 million goal. The Saltus ‘Helping Hands Committee’ presented Ms Lyons with a cheque for $1,242.96.

The committee includes S9s Logan Aguiar, Bryana Bell, Tia Burrows, Zara Francis-Roban, Zajae Lee, Natasha Lowe, Kaya Montarsolo, Taylor Mullan, Amalia Pontes, Kelly Simmons, Zariah Simmons, Kayla Simons, Toriah Smith, Jordan Swan, and Hannah Thompson; and SGY1s Sarah Czarnecki, Daniel Oatley, Jonathan Speight, and Kyle Eve-Townsend. There will be other fundraising activities in support of the ‘Why It Matters’ campaign later in the year.
