Originality Matters

Warwick Academy’s secondary school assembly had an unusual guest this week which left many students wondering why an elephant had come to assembly!

The Bermuda Hospitals Board’s Mascot, Dr. Eddie the Elephant came to present a special award.

The public relations department of the Hospital felt it was a priority for the public to learn what will be in the new wing of the hospital, its importance and where the public needs to go once the new wing opens in September.

The hospital knew that students are great at spreading news so they decided to go to the schools and ask them to create any type of material they saw fit to get the message across to the public.

Students could compose a song, make a poster, dance, write a skit- whatever they felt would be the best way of relaying this message.

Warwick Academy was the first school to contact the hospital about having students enter the competition and our English teacher Jennifer Hind expressed an interest in having her class do it as a project.

Although the initial thoughts didn’t include a group project, the hospital was extremely pleased with the submissions presented by two groups.

The submissions included a thorough media strategy in addition to the promotional materials.

Each group decided on the focus of its messaging and developed a poster, flyer and radio script.

The Hospital loved the materials created and was very impressed with the radio scripts.

In the end, the group that came up with the catch phrase “Where Caring is Key” won overall.

This group consisted of Carmel Butterfield, Kristian Singh, Rhyn Beardon, Jesse Washington and Isaac McRonald.

So as you listen to the radio over the months to come, listen out for the Hospital Boards adverts and when you hear “Where Caring is Key”…you know that came from our students here at Warwick Academy!
