‘Please keep our roads safe’

Safety messages: Young students from the Center for Talented Youth have written letters outlining their thoughts and ideas on road safety

The Center for Talented Youth nurtures and supports the development of students from both private and public schools.

The Creative Writing Class focused on road safety at their last class and wished to share their thoughts.

Dear Editor,

My name is Amari Stewart and these are my road safety recommendations:

• Lower the speed limit

• More stop lights

• Reinforce road laws

• No drunk driving

• •Keeps hands on the wheel

• Keep eyes on the road at ALL times

Thank you!

Amari Stewart, 10

Dear Editor,

I think that Bermuda’s roads would be a lot safer if people actually followed the laws and turned on their signals at the right time.

I mean, some people just don’t know if you’re turning or not, so they just drive right into you! So, follow the laws, turn on your signals and bicycles to the side of the road etc.

PS Never, ever FLOOR it!

Dear Police,

Good day officers. I’m 9 years old. I have a few recommendations for you: First of all, there should be more Police presence on the roads... hmm… did you ever think about that?

If people don’t see officers, they might text on their phones, iPads, Kindle tablets, it doesn’t matter really, what matters is they could be in an accident.

Dear Editor,

I am 8 years old. I think that when people get involved in accidents, they don’t even care about what happens.

Some people even die in accidents! Here are some recommendations I feel people should consider:

• No speeding

• No overtaking

• No drinking while driving.

All of these things need to stop!

Dear Editor,

My name is Kristy Sanchez. I’d like to share my viewpoints on road safety.

During the past few weeks, there have been at least five accidents, back-to-back.

Even though I’m just 11, I want to make a difference. Here are some ways I think we can solve this problem:

• Reinforce speeding and don’t drink and drive laws

• More signs, stop lights and speed bumps

• No phone use while driving

• Keep your eyes on the road and no high beams in front of people

• Increase the number of road lamps

• No overtaking

These are only a few of my ideas. We need to keep Bermuda safe!

Dear Editor,

I am 8 years old and have some suggestions on how to prevent accidents.

These are only a few, though, maybe some people can follow these tips and maybe there will be fewer accidents:

• Decrease the speed limit in some areas

• Try not to overtake other vehicles

• Don’t speed down hills

• Observe the speed limits

• No driving under the influence of alcohol

• No driving foolishly

• No stopping in the middle of the road to ‘talk’

• More stop lights are needed

• Pedal bicycles need to stay to the side of the roads

I hope these help Bermuda with the accidents.

People are dying or getting seriously injured!

I hope these helpful tips will help Bermuda.

Dear Editor,

I am 10 years old and I am worried about our roads. Four people killed in two weeks and who knows how many more.

You should try hard to keep the roads safer.

I don’t want to be rude, but all citizens should try not to be so careless on the road.

Maybe you can keep your hands on the steering wheel or not use your phone in the car or keep a car length between you and the other cars.

Please keep my ideas in mind. Thank you,
