Education: what is the purpose?

Could you imagine what your life would be like if you did not know how to read, write or express your opinion? Life would be difficult. As we look at the purpose of education, it is important to realise that education goes deeper than tests, quizzes and homework. Our teachers are preparing us for our future. Through education, we learn a complex set of skills. Education answers our questions and fills our desire to know more. We develop the essential skills for life. We learn how to express ourselves and feed our interests and passions. We learn social skills and respect. Through education, we can set standards and morals for ourselves. Knowledge opens up the doors to our freedom.

With knowledge, we can do anything. It gives us the opportunity to find a path in life that will put us on the road to success. Learning has given us the ability to be the people we are able to be today and the independence to be the individuals we are destined to become. Education allows us to save lives, cure diseases, and fix or invent new things. With education we can build anything, support those in need and conquer the indifferences and struggles of our society. All that we learn is a precious gift.

Education is my freedom. I feel it is important for others not to take their learning for granted — there are millions who wish for an education. Everything I have learnt has been taught by some of the most amazing teachers. I would like to thank them as well as all the other teachers, coaches, counsellors and inspirational people in Bermuda who guide us on the path of unstoppable success.
