It's a new academic year and our Eco Schools students are hard at work learning about and protecting the environment and their school for their future.

The Eco Schools programme is an international school sustainability programme where students learn about the different aspects of sustainability. They then use this information to execute projects around their school to make it a more sustainable place. There are 10 different pathways a school can choose from under the umbrella of sustainability. They are Water, Energy, Biodiversity, Sustainable Food, Healthy Living, Waste and Litter, Transport, School Grounds, Healthy School Buildings and Marine and Coast.

West Pembroke students are focusing on Healthy Living this year. Healthy living includes topics such as exercise and getting enough rest as well as diet and nutrition. Building on previous years in the Eco Schools programme, students are ensuring they get plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables from their school garden and at home.

BHS and Warwick Academy are both doing Waste and Litter this year. BHS, one of the newer Eco Schools, started in January 2017 while Warwick Academy started the pathway this September. Both schools recognise the recess and lunch hour creates the most opportunity for waste. Students' aim at both schools is to reduce the amount of waste created through different implementing of new policies in relation to the use of plastics. (bags, cutlery, plates and containers).

Even the youngest students can participate in the Eco Schools programme. Little learners at Stepping Stones Preschool have been digging around their school garden learning about where their food comes from and when they can grow it. An early start can lead to a lifetime of caring for the environment and eating healthy.
