Bermuda’s wonderful light captured on canvas

For the past few months Masterworks’ artist-in-residence Jana Matusz has soaked up the Bermuda light.
She first visited the Island last March when she was in need of an escape from the bleak, cold and dreary winter of Boston.
It was then that she learned about the artist-in-residence programme. Thirteen months later she was here with painting gear in hand.
She says it’s the light that makes Bermuda special for artists.
“Many artist colonies, Cape Cod, for example, or St Ives in Cornwall, are out on peninsulas, almost surrounded by water,” she said.
“Bermuda, of course, is completely surrounded by water, lots of it. And it does do something to the light. It’s really special.
“The intensity and the liveliness of that light is captured by the beautiful intense turquoise waters, the palm trees and interesting vegetation, and the unique and distinctive Bermudian architecture.
“I am so in love with the architecture. I’m captivated by the white roofs, the solid grace, the delightful details and the simple, strong forms that give that gorgeous light something wonderful to fall on. For an artist who loves composition, colour and light, painting in Bermuda is a real treat.”
She has found plenty of inspiration near her temporary home, a National Trust property in the town of St George’s.
She’s also ventured over to Tobacco Bay, Coot Pond, Fort St Catherine and the Almeida Farm to sketch and paint.
She paints primarily in acrylic, and draws using water-soluble media. Her work has focused on landscape, but includes still life, figure and animals.
Ms Matusz’s show opened last Friday and is up until June 29. She will be holding several workshops next Tuesday. All classes are $45 for members and $50 for non-members. Basic supplies will be provided. To reserve a spot telephone 236-2950.
