Nisbett wins battle between Island’s top show jumpers
Patrick Nisbett claimed bragging rights in the weekend’s International harness race pitting three of the Island’s overseas professional show jumpers against each other.
The former PHC Zebras footballer pipped Raishun Burch at the line by one fifth of a second to win the one-off exhibition race in 1.12 flat.
Ki Minors came in third a further one fifth of a second off the lead pace.
The trio had returned home to take part in Bermuda Equestrian Federation’s (BEF) Welcome Home Show at the Botanical Gardens and had agreed to take part in the harness racing spectacle that gave fans at Vesey Street an added treat.
“The race was very competitive and they all had fun,” commented Driving Horse and Pony Club (DHPC) president Micheal Rodriguez. “They really enjoyed the night and had their fan club that came from the horse show to the races to cheer them on.”
Rodriguez said the trio’s performance on the race track took him by surprise.
“It was pretty fast and they all exceeded my expectations,” he added. “All three of them are good horsemen and they all did pretty good.”
The DHPC chief said the trio enjoyed themselves so much that they have already indicated that they would like to try their luck at harness racing again in the future.
“Obviously they are very busy with their other sporting commitments but they did mention they would like to come and do this again if possible,” Rodriguez added.
Nisbett became the first Bermudian show jumper to compete at the FEI World Equestrian Games last year and more recently flew the Island’s banner at this year’s Pan Am Games in Mexico along with compatriot Jill Terceira, who also took part in the weekend’s BEF fundraiser at the Botanical Gardens that was drenched by torrential rain on the second day.
Minors currently competes in the US while University student Burch, who is regularly based in Germany, competes internationally as well.
