Evans sets new school record
Aaron Evans broke his own 800 metre record while competing for the University of Georgia at the Husky Invitational in Seattle, Washington, finishing second ahead of a top US Olympian.
Evans, who also holds the Bermuda record as well as the indoor and outdoor school records, finished in a time of one minute, 47.88 seconds, just one hundredth of a second from the winning time.
The new record is the sixth fastest time in the nation and third fastest in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) this year, and puts the Bermudian closer to the Olympic qualifying time of 1:46.30.
The previous record was 1:48.07, and both Bulldogs coach Jeff Pigg and Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) president Donna Watson were ecstatic about the Bermudian’s result.
“Aaron ran a really impressive race where he beat an Olympian in Kevin Hicks and many other tough competitors,” said Bulldog distance coach Jeff Pigg.
“It’s exciting to see Aaron have this success sine he’s been working so hard with great focus.
Watson added: “I have no doubt that Aaron will reach the (Olympic) standard especially with him running these sort of times indoor at the beginning of the season. He hasn’t started his outdoor season and hopefully he stays healthy.
Tyrone Smith, competing in an indoor meet in Tarta, Estonia, continued his European tour with a second place, jumping 7.82m at the weekend.
Smith has been competing indoors overseas as he makes final preparations for the upcoming World Championships.
“We are pleased to see Tyrone continuing to improve with each competition leading up to the World Indoor Championships,” said Bermuda Track and Field Association president Donna Watson.
Taylor Ashley-Bean also had a weekend to remember, helping Virginia State University to the CIAA Indoor T&F Championships.
Bean won the mile in a time of 5:21.5 seconds, the 3000m (11:35.87), and finished third in the 800m (2:19.07), results that had her named CIAA Women’s Track MVP along with team-mate Samantha Edwards.
