With another successful Bermuda Marathon Weekend completed, attention has now switched to the Carifta Games which is two months away.So far two female athletes have reached qualifying standards, Tiara Derosa in the Under-17 shot putt and, last weekend, Kerri Furbert in the long jump. Both were ‘A’ standard marks.The push to get more athletes qualified for the event will move into top gear with a two-day track meet this weekend and with several more scheduled up to mid-March.Many of those expected to qualify will miss this weekend’s meet because they will be part of a 12-member team representing Bermuda at the NACAC Cross-Country championships in Mandeville, Jamaica on Saturday afternoon.That team will include Juma Mouchette and Kyrah Scraders who both won medals at last year’s Carifta Games as Bermuda had six podium finishes. Mouchette won a bronze in the Under-20 5,000 metres while Scraders claimed silver in the Under-17 girl 1,500 metres.Bermuda track and Field Association, now the Bermuda National Athletic Association, acted quickly to secure a 150-seat charter plane to this year’s Games in Bahamas from March 28 to April 1 and that charter is now sold out.The flight will leave Bermuda on March 28 and return on April 2.“I think the excitement was from Carifta,” said BNAA President Donna Watson in November when the association revealed that a charter had been booked.“I made the announcement at Carifta that we were going to have a charter, so I’ve had people come up to me since Carifta and the interesting thing is these are not just parents of the athletes but people who just like track and field.“They enjoyed Carifta, like the environment and just want to go to Bahamas.”The Carifta Games will be staged at the newly-built Thomas Robinson Stadium which seats 15,000.This will be the seventh time that Bahamas has hosted the Games, the last time in 2002.Initially four teams showed interest in staging the Games Bahamas, Barbados, Cayman Islands and Martinique but Bahamas were eventually chosen over Caylam Islands.Bermuda was represented by 55 athletes at last year’s Games on home soil, with 38 competing for the Island in Jamaica in 2011.Now the push begins to get athletes qualified for the Bahamas festival with this weekend’s meet followed by another meet hosted by the BNAA on February 2 and a two-day meet put on by Pacers Track Club on February 9 and 10.
