Govt to get tougher on money laundering

Government is hoping to make money laundering and terrorist financing more difficult with a slew of measures tabled in the House of Assembly on Friday. The Proceeds of Crime and Related Measures Amendment Act 2013 proposes to amend five laws and regulations. It would require people to report suspicious transactions in relation to money laundering or terrorist financing, make it an offence to disclose that a suspicious transaction report had been filed with the authorities and broadens the definition of terrorism to include the use of racial, ethnic or philosophical causes. The bill would also broaden the recognised means by which terrorist acts can be committed — to include unlawful acts which endanger civil aviation, hostage taking, interfering with nuclear material, unlawful violence on fixed marine platforms and at airports, and bombing public facilities.
