Brown tops leadership poll

Dr Ewart Brown has been voted the most effective Premier over the past ten years.

In a survey conducted by The Royal Gazette, 26 percent of 419 homes said Dr Brown was the most effective Premier, only five percent said they thought Craig Cannonier had been the most effective, while 31 percent said no Premier over the last ten years had been effective.

Those polled and showed their support for Dr Brown, said he was “productive” and “got the job done”, that he was a “strong, confident, effective leader,” and had a “caring attitude to Bermuda and its people.”

The survey, conducted by Global Research, utilised Computer Assisted Telephone Interview (CATI) to interview 419 Bermuda residents aged 18 years and older between March 31 and April 6 this year, with each interview lasting approximately ten minutes. The results were weighed to be representative of Bermuda’s population on three factors — gender, age, and education.

The margin of error for the study was plus or minus five percent, with a confidence level of 95 percent.

Eight percent of those surveyed thought former Premiers Paula Cox and Alex Scott were the most effective Premiers, just ahead of Dame Jennifer Smith (seven percent) and Cannonier (five percent).

Thirty-one percent of those polled said that no Premier had been effective, while 16 percent said that they just didn’t know.

The top reason why residents thought Premier Cannonier was the most effective was his ability to instil “hope for change/improvement,” while residents said Mr Scott and Ms Cox’s “caring attitude towards Bermuda and its people” was the biggest reason for their effectiveness.

They also said Dame Jennifer was a “strong, confident, effective leader.”
