Women deny fighting on Front Street

Two women who have been charged with fighting two other women on Front Street last Saturday went on trial at Magistrates’ Court.

On Monday, M’aeisha Weeks, 21, of Pembroke, and Asha Joell, 21, from Winton, North Carolina, pleaded not guilty to being involved in a fight and violently resisting arrest.

Prosecutor Loxley Ricketts said the incident occurred near the Bermuda Bistro At The Beach restaurant on Front Street.

Police Constables Terry Thompson and Donavan James were outside the venue when they noticed a disturbance, with several people overflowing on to the pavement, and into the street.

The two officers left their police car to get closer and noticed four women, who were punching each other. The women were told to break it up by the officers but continued. PC James sprayed the women with captor spray and tried to arrest one of them, who was later revealed to be Ms Weeks, daughter of MP Michael Weeks. She allegedly continued to kick and push violently as he tried to arrest her. Other officers later arrived to provide assistance.

The court heard that PC Thompson, meanwhile, tried to arrest another of the girls who was revealed later to be Ms Joell. As he tried to arrest her she was allegedly punching him and screaming at him.

She is also alleged to have told him: “You can’t take a hit from a girl, I’ll remember that you p****.”

While PC Thompson tried to make the arrest, others surrounding him tried to throw drinks in his direction. Three other officers eventually arrived to provide assistance. The two defendants were taken to Hamilton Police Station to be detained.

The matter will return to court on August 18.
