Slowing down is more dangerous

Is slowing down the answer? This bike was involved in a recent accident on South Shore Road

Dear Sir,

After all of the recent fatal road accidents and requests to slow down, I decided to limit my speed on my bike to between 40kph and 45kph on my commute to and from work.

But it didn’t take very long before numerous cars were overtaking at high speeds, at inopportune times, and nearly hitting oncoming traffic.

My doing 40kph actually put myself and others in more danger because of the impatience of others.

So while it is convenient to point the finger at bikers and the creation of the so-called third lane, we will not have safer roads until all motorists respect the need to drive more carefully.

Sadly, until this happens, the reality is that I am safer doing between 50kph and 55kph and risking getting a ticket rather than doing 40kph and “creating” a dangerous situation for all other road users.

That is a sad and counterintuitive observation, but nonetheless it is reality at the present time.

SALVATORE TUCCI,
