President proud of Gayle’s exploits

Jamaican Association (Bermuda) president Orville Campbell

Orville Campbell, the Jamaican Association (Bermuda) president, has hailed the record breaking exploits of compatriots Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels at the World Cup on Tuesday.

The West Indies pair broke several records during their side’s 73 run victory over Zimbabwe, with Gayle’s record-breaking 215 the first double century in the tournament and the 147-ball innings the fastest double century in one-day international cricket.

Gayle and Samuels’s 372-run partnership was the highest for any wicket in one-day internationals, and commenting on the pair’s record breaking exploits Campbell said: “The Jamaican Association (Bermuda) and indeed the wider Jamaican community are all celebrating this tremendous achievement by our dear Jamaican brother, Chris Gayle. On behalf of the Jamaican Association (Bermuda), I am hereby congratulating Chris Gayle on his unrivalled and historic achievement.

“We are certainly looking forward to seeing continued improvement across all fronts in the West Indies team performance going ahead.”

n The Jamaican Association are one of four teams that have signed to play in the Commercial Cricket League this season, alongside Spring Garden Cavaliers, North Village and Bailey’s Bay.

However, Barry Richards, the league president, is looking for at least two more to join the league. Young Men’s Social Club, who played last year, have yet to confirm if they will return or not, while Richards is also hoping that St David’s will enter a side.
