St David’s coach Ricky Brangman is thrilled with his team’s victory over East End rivals St George’s in the Premier Division Champion of Champions.

The Islanders cruised to a comfortable eight-wicket victory at Somerset Cricket Club on Saturday to pick up their first trophy of the season much to the delight of Brangman.

“It feels good and it’s good for the team in our first game to come off and get a trophy,” he told The Royal Gazette.

“I thought we did very good; the players are excited and it’s nice to start off the season with a trophy under your belt.

“I thought we gave them a little too many runs and should’ve shut it down early when we had them in trouble, but then coming to batting we picked it up and got the win.

“The guys are feeling very good and it’s just a good feeling to start off right and get a nice trophy.”

While happy to have achieved the desired outcome, Brangman is not getting carried away with a long season to come.

“The season really hasn’t started yet so I told the guys to enjoy the moment because work still has to be done,” he said.

“We just have to stay together, keep training and take it one game at a time once the season starts.”

St George’s posted 184 for seven after electing to take first strike, which was not enough as St David’s replied with 188 for two in 18 overs.

St George’s coach Clay Smith admits the heavy loss was hard to swallow despite his team’s lack of batting practice in the lead-up to the derby match.

“Tough loss against a good team who, like us, knows how to win,” Smith said.

“It was our first time getting out in the middle so it was good to get the kinks out. Hopefully we can grow from this and improve as a unit going forward.

“We had more positives than negatives to take from the game so now the focus is preparing for the start of the league which is two weeks away.”
