Duffy could return for Albuoy’s Point race

Dominating the Xterra Series: Duffy

The Tokio Millennium Re Sprint Triathlon and Duathlon will be held at Albuoy’s Point on May 31.

Last year’s event was won by professional triathletes Tyler and Nikki Butterfield, with Karen Smith and son Tyler both placing second in the overall female and male events.

The Butterfields are unable to defend their titles this year, as Tyler, who is sponsored by Tokio Millennium Re, continues his professional season overseas in pursuit of success at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii in October.

His wife Nikki has retired from triathlon.

Tokio Millennium has extended sponsorship to Bermuda’s top female triathlete Flora Duffy, the Xterra Series world champion, who is looking to qualify for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

If Duffy is not required to race in the ITU World Cup race in London on May 31, it is expected that she will compete for top honours in the Albuoy’s Point race.

A strong showing is expected from both Tyler and Karen Smith, on the back of Karen’s impressive age-group victory at last year’s Ironman World Championships and Tyler’s encouraging performances in this year’s Youth Elite triathlon races.

All ages are encouraged to participate in the race alongside Bermuda’s top multi-sport athletes, while schools are encouraged to enter teams for a chance to win prize money that will be contributed to their athletic programmes.

The event presents an opportunity for those new to multi-sport to participate in a well-organised short-course event.

More seasoned triathletes will have the opportunity to race in a quality event with a high level of competition.

The event will include five race categories. The Senior Individual Sprint Triathlon and the Senior Team Triathlon involve a 750-metre swim, 20km bike ride and 5km run.

The Try-a-Tri, designed for those new to the sport, is a 200m swim, 10km bike and 2km run.

In the Duathlon category, children aged 7 to 10-years-old will compete in a 1km run, 4km bike and another 1km run, while juniors 11 to 15-years-old will compete over a longer distance, with a 2km run, 8km bike and another 2km run.

For the Senior School Challenge, teams can compete in the Duathlon, with one person running 2km, the second riding 8km, and the runner completing another 2km, or the Try-a-Tri course, consisting of three members, with one person swimming 200m, one riding 10km, and another running 2km.

Overall times for the top two teams from each school determine the winners of the cash prizes for the triathlon and duathlon, to be donated to the respective school sports programmes. Other prize categories include overall male and female winner, the (Re)Insurance Cup with a $5,000 donation and the Corporate Cup with a $5,000 donation.
