Island proud to host the America’s Cup

Dear Sir,

I’m writing regarding the “economic impact” study that was reported on in The Royal Gazette yesterday (Views on America’s Cup surveyed, June 10).

As any person who has taken a statistics course during their business degree can tell you, the questions were worded poorly and geared towards a negative outcome.

But what they don’t realise is that whatever news they report, however skewed, isn’t just picked up in Bermuda when it comes to the America’s Cup.

Case in point, Scuttlebutt, a well known sailing website, reported on the poll (www.sailingscuttlebutt.com/2015/06/09/bermudians-question-benefit-of-americas-cup/), and has portrayed Bermudians as ungrateful for the cup to be based and won here.

This isn’t the impression Bermuda, or Bermudians, want to give the world when it comes to the Cup.

We want to show we are united and proud to be the home of the 35th America’s Cup.

I would urge those who feel it’s necessary to spew a negative message to be careful in the future.

This isn’t the first time the website has picked up and run with a negative story surrounding the Cup.

We are under a microscope in the sailing community and we need to give everyone the impression that we want to keep the Cup, and that we want to ensure this will be the best America’s Cup the world has ever seen.
