Fahy issues passport reminder

Senator Michael Fahy, the Minister of Home Affairs

Senator Michael Fahy took the opportunity to remind parents to ensure they give plenty of time for renewal of their passports and children’s passports.

Speaking during the motion to adjourn in the Senate today, Mr Fahy said that under new rules, fast tracking of passport applications is now limited to medical emergencies. He said he had received two calls just this morning from frustrated parents complaining their passports may not be processed in time for their travel.

Mr Fahy said: “I have to take a moment to remind the public that as we transition into the new passport system by UK passport procedure, our ability to issue non-emergency passports is diminished significantly — we only have the ability in medical situations.

“It is with regret I have to send out e-mails. Please, as a parent check to make sure your kids and yours are up to date before you travel. I am unable to assist.”

Minister Fahy also joined with senator Vic Ball in reminding the public not to drink and drive over Cup Match while senator Renee Ming reminded the public not to forget the true origins behind the holiday.
