New project is not only hotel in St George’s

The new hotel development will be on land at the Old Club Med site, above (File photograph)

Dear Sir,

I would like to comment on all the press regarding the new St George’s Hotel development Bill passed early yesterday.

I was frustrated when I listened to the news on my drive to work, with Peter Cattell saying something along the lines of “St George’s will certainly benefit from the development of a new hotel, having been without one for many years”. News to Peter Cattell, and all Bermuda media — there is a hotel in St George’s. It’s called the St George’s Club.

Although previously known as a “timeshare/fractional” property, the St George’s Club opened its doors many years ago to the transient visitor, having been listed on many travel websites — Expedia, Orbitz and Travelocity, to name a few.

Although I applaud the Bermuda Government’s quest to facilitate the creation of jobs, as well as increase tourism with a new hotel development, constantly phrasing this new development as the “only hotel in St George’s” totally negates all the hard work that the St George’s Club has been doing all these years.

It has updated all of its rooms and offers a fantastic, unique offering for their guests — new, repeat or timeshare. We should at least acknowledge them, rather than refer to this new development as the “saviour” of St George’s.

I also hope that the OBA and developers of this new hotel have at least reached out to the hotel to gain an understanding of what it’s like to do business in the east.

Sincerely, ST GEORGE’S CLUB SUPPORTER, Paget
