Champions of Champions set for return

Plans are in the works to bring back the Champion of Champions competition.

The competition started in 1978 and involved the champions of the three counties but has not been played for more than a decade after losing some of its appeal.

“We have to finalise some details but it is definitely being looked into,” said Gershon Gibbons, a Central Counties official who played in the Champion of Champions with Western Stars and also played for Flatts in the Eastern Counties.

“It is being talked about and we’re just trying to finalise it and get the information out there.”

The hope is to revive the tournament at the end of the season, playing a semi-final and then a final on the same weekend. Western Stars and Willow Cuts are the Central and Western Counties champions while Cleveland retained the Eastern Counties.

“Yes, we’re looking at some dates, but it will have to be after this weekend,” Gibbons said. “The counties are all looking into it.”
