Wollmann gives performance thumbs up

Wollmann finished fifteenth in Malaysia

Cecilia Wollmann gave her impressive showing at the Youth Sailing World Championships in Malaysia the thumbs up.

The Rio Olympic Games hopeful once again demonstrated her potential after placing an impressive fifteenth in the 54-strong Laser Radial girls fleet.

Wollmann, who is also trying out for Bermuda’s Red Bull Youth America’s Cup team, held her own at the regatta contested mostly in heavy winds and managed two top-tens and a best finish of sixth.

“I have worked really hard for this and happy finishing fifteenth,” said Wollmann, who improved upon her previous best of 30th the year before. “I look forward to competing next year and continuing my improvement and would also like to thank the Bermuda Sailing Association for all of their support.”

Maria Erdi, of Hungary, won the gold medal with silver and bronze going to Hannah Anderssohn, of Germany, and Magdalena Kwasna, of Poland.

Also competing in Malaysia was Wollmann’s brother, Mikey, in the Laser Radial boys fleet.

Mikey placed 39th among a fleet of 68 with a best finish of 23rd to cap a creditable showing on his debut at the championships.

“This was a great experience for me,” he said. “It was an honour representing Bermuda at such a prestigious event.”

Alistair Young, of Australia, clinched the gold medal with silver going to George Gautrey, of New Zealand, and bronze to Daniel Whiteley of Great Britain.

The Wollmann siblings punched their tickets to Malaysia after placing tenth and eleventh at last summer’s Sail Canada Youth National Championships in Kingston, Ontario.

A record 425 sailors from 76 nations competed at the Youth Sailing World Championships which were held from December 27 to January 3 off the island of Langkawi.

The championships are for sailors aged 19 and under and were first held in Sweden in 1971. Former notable winners include America’s Cup skippers Sir Ben Ainslie, Sir Russell Coutts and Dean Barker.

Bermuda hosted the 1995 Youth Sailing World Championships with Ainslie, the most decorated Olympic sailor, winning gold in the Laser.

Meanwhile, Benn Smith was among a large local contingent at the Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta in Florida.

The son of Malcolm Smith, the former World Sunfish champion and Male Athlete of the Year, underlined his potential with an impressive nineteenth out of 101 competitors in the Laser Radial fleet.

Smith enjoyed seven top-ten finishes in the 11-race series, placing fourth twice. Leo Boucher, of Severn Sailing, claimed overall honours.

Flying the Island’s flag among various fleets in the Optimist dinghy were Adam Larson, Jacob Pimentel, Daylon Whitter, Nicholas Bridges, Aiden Lopes, Ethan Edmunds, Daniel Larson, Magnus Ringstead, Sebastion Kempe, Christian Ebbin, Jack Roberts, Peter Komposch and Rachel Betschart.

Adam Larson was the top local and 23rd overall, followed by Ebbin in 102nd and Kempe who placed 107th in an overall fleet of 225 boats.

The Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta took place from December 27 to 30 and is hosted annually by the Coral Reef Yacht Club.
