Dozens of motorists issued traffic tickets today
Close to 70 traffic tickets were issued to motorists this morning as the Bermuda Police Service continued road safety and enforcement efforts across the island.
Officers handed out the penalties between 7am and about 11am, according to a post on the BPS Instagram account, with 40 for speeding offences.
Ten were issued to motorists for using a mobile phone while operating a vehicle while the remaining tickets were issued for a range of other traffic offences.
It came after at least 100 tickets were issued by police in little more than 24 hours during enforcement efforts over the weekend.
The police said road traffic exercises were being carried out throughout the day, with officers maintaining an increased presence on Bermuda’s roads.
It was noted on the Instagram post that despite the increased police presence, motorists continue to “demonstrate a concerning disregard” for the rules of the road and the safety of others.
Police urged road users to slow down, exercise caution and remain considerate of others.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility, and every decision made behind the wheel can have serious consequences,” they said.
It was announced last week, soon after the thirteenth road fatality of 2026 was confirmed, that extra officers would be drafted in on overtime to target traffic offences, particularly those most likely to lead to death and serious injury.
Darrin Simons, the Commissioner of Police, said then that those include speeding, impaired driving, dangerous and careless driving, mobile phone use and unsafe overtaking.
Mr Simons asked members of the public to report dangerous and reckless driving by calling 911.
He said timely reports can help the police in its response efforts.
