Jewellery thief receives jail stint

A 42-year-old woman has been sentenced to prison for separate incidents in which she stole jewellery from residences.

Magistrates’ Court heard today that Kylah Stowe committed theft on December 30 on Happy Valley Road, Pembroke, followed by burglary on May 5 on Cobbs Hill Road, Paget.

It was revealed that the defendant has been known to the court for more than two decades — with previous convictions including violence, drug offences and dishonesty.

The court also heard that Stowe had recently been terminated from a drug treatment programme.

Senior magistrate Juan Wolffe sentenced the defendant to 12 months in jail for the burglary and three months for the theft, with the sentences to run concurrently and with time in custody taken into account.

He also ordered two years of probation following the custodial sentence, during which time Stowe will participate in drug or alcohol counselling and psychiatric treatment.

She can also be subjected to random drug testing and will report to court services as deemed necessary.

“Ms Stowe’s struggle is not being locked up, it’s what happens after,” Mr Wolffe said.

“I want to apologise for my actions. I’m seeing a psychiatrist to deal with my issues,” the defendant said.
