A 49-year-old drink-driver has been fined and banned from the roads for 18 months.

Appearing in Magistrates’ Court this morning, Angelo Amaral pleaded guilty to driving while over the legal alcohol limit in Pembroke on May 17.

The court heard that he was stopped on Marsh Folly Road after officers saw him run a stop sign and cut into the path of a taxi.

While speaking to Amaral, they noticed signs of intoxication and arrested him on suspicion of driving while impaired.

He was taken to Hamilton Police Station, where it was determined that he had 204 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood — more than 2½ times the legal limit of 80mg.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo disqualified him from driving all vehicles for 18 months and handed him a $1,200 fine.
