Trott determined to make most of opportunity

Charles Trott said he is determined to make the most of an initial stint at Oxstead and Limpsfield, whose youth team play in the Surrey Youth League.

The PHC and Bermuda Under-19 cricketer, who arrived in England yesterday, is keen to make further inroads in his quest to one day join the professional ranks.

“It is a dream of mine to play professional cricket one day, and so I want to take the opportunity with both hands and hopefully it opens other doors for me,” Trott said.

“I’m really excited because this is a great opportunity for me to better myself as a person, and also as a cricketer playing at a higher level than I have been playing in Bermuda.

I will also be going to school over there with a personal tutor and so the experience is going to help me improve all-around.”

Trott, who graduated from Berkeley Institute this week, could potentially make his debut with his new club as early as tomorrow.

“My first game could be on Saturday and then I will just have to see how it goes from there,” he said. “I am a bit nervous. But I will get used to it and if I can play to my potential then I think I will do pretty good.

“It’s going to take a little while for me to adapt to my new surroundings, but I will get used to it.”

The 17-year-old middle-order batsman and opening bowler has joined the growing list of young Bermudian cricketers, including Delray Rawlins, the Bermuda Under-19 captain, who are overseas.

“Seeing they can play to their abilities and make it over there gives me encouragement, and let’s me know that I can make it also if I can play to my potential,” Trott said.

During a nearly three-month stay Trott will also train with the coaching staff at county side Surrey.

The opportunity has been made possible by the support of the player’s club and a flourishing partnership between Dean Minors, the former St George’s and Bermuda wicketkeeper, and Chris Thompson, the former Surrey and England Under-19 opening batsman.

Minors struck up a partnership with Thompson when he visited Bermuda with the MCC in 2011.

“I’d like to thank Mr Minors for providing me the opportunity and PHC for their financial assistance and support,” Trott said.

“I have a lot fun playing for PHC. We are not the best of teams but we really enjoy the game and playing with each other.

“A lot of my team-mates have given me encouragement and some of them have already been out there [in England] and played at that level. They have talked to me about their experiences.”

Trott is the second local cricketer after Isaiah Creighton to benefit from the partnership between Minors and Thompson.

Creighton, the Cleveland County spin bowler, joined Alleyn Cricket Club in Division Five of the Surrey Championship last month, where he will remain until the end of the season.
