Canada T20 was a learning experience for Leverock

Bermuda all-rounder Kamau Leverock

Kamau Leverock said being involved in the inaugural Global T20 Canada was “something special” and believes that the experience can only bode well for his game.

The Bermuda all-rounder was a member of the Vancouver Knights, led by former West Indies captain Chris Gayle, who won the tournament after thrashing rivals West Indies B by seven-wickets in the final at the Maple Leaf Cricket Club in King City, Toronto, at the weekend

“Thanks to @Doncricket2004 for the opportunity to be around something special,” Leverock tweeted. “Learned a lot and hope to be back again @GT20Canada.”

Leverock did not feature in the final and made just one appearance for the Knights during the tournament, scoring five runs batting No 7 and conceding seven runs in the only over he sent down in his team’s 18-run win over Montreal Tigers.

The nephew of former Bermuda left-arm spinner Dwayne “Sluggo” Leverock was named in the Knights’ 14-man squad after being drafted as their twelfth pick.

More than 1,500 from Canada and around the world registered for selection for the draft.

The six-team tournament brought together some of the most exciting players in the T20 format, the quickest version of international cricket.

Among the leading lights were Australians Steve Smith and David Warner, who are serving 12-month bans from international cricket imposed by their national association for their involvement in a ball-tampering scandal in South Africa in March.

Also included in the list of marquee players were West Indies trio Daren Sammy, Sunil Narine and Dwayne Bravo.

Guiding the Knights to victory over the West Indies B were Saad Bin Zafar and Van der Dussen who produced a match winning 126-run partnership.

Pakistan-born Zafar, who made his first-class debut for Canada against Bermuda at the same ground ten years ago, hit 79 from 48 balls and South African Dussen 44 from 41 balls as the Knights reached 148 for with 15 balls to spare in reply to West Indies B’s 145 all out.

The West Indies B found the going tough after being sent to bat with Jamaican all-rounder Fabian Allen the only batsman offering any significant resistance with 41 from 23 balls.

Sheldon Cottrell, the Jamaican left-arm seam bowler, was the pick of the Knights bowling with four for 29 while Fawad Ahmed, the Australian leg spinner, claimed three for 24.
