Truran leads Bermuda triumph

Glory hunters: Truran, left, and Amos show their prizes

Bermuda had double joy at the Pan American Equestrian Confederation’s Caribbean Junior Jumping Challenge, winning the team event with Casey Truran taking the individual prize.

The local team held off the challenge of Cayman Islands, who they beat in a tiebreaker to win the team away at the Ronald C. Waranch Equestrian Centre, Savannah College of Art and Design in Hardeeville, South Carolina.

Despite the Bermuda riders placing third and tenth on Day 1, the first-round results had Bermuda in fourth place, trailing the leaders by seven points. On the final day of competition, the last rider to compete was BerTruran, who successfully went clear and proceeded to the jump-off phase where he came .08 seconds within the optimum time of 30 seconds, placing first with Kelsey Amos coming seventh. This resulted in Bermuda proudly winning the competition over Caymans, who were equal on points but who had incurred four faults over the two days with Bermuda going clear throughout.

The event organisers said: “The last day of competition was full of surprises and all the riders showed themselves to be very competent. Casey Truran rode almost exactly to the optimum time of 30 seconds in his jump-off.“

Truran scored 27 points, with the next closest competitor achieving 21.
