Healthy ageing starts now
Health-conscious seniors enjoyed an afternoon of fun exercises at a session organised by the Ministry of Health yesterday.
The Celebrating Wellness event at Victoria Park, Hamilton, had the theme “Healthy Ageing Starts Now” and was designed to promote healthy eating and active living.
Seniors took part in Move More Bingo, soca sweat, old school line dancing, Zumba, a best hat competition, massages and reflexology.
Kim Wilson, the health minister, said as she opened the event: “The term ‘healthy ageing’ refers to the ability to function physically, mentally, socially and emotionally as the body slows down its processes with rising age.
“It means remaining healthy and active in the later stages of life, too. Ageing simply refers to growing older.”
She added: “There are many influences that directly impact healthy ageing and four key behaviours that we can all start today to ensure healthy ageing, they are — not smoking, moderate drinking, regular exercise and eating fruits and vegetables daily.
“These strategies can start today, all we need to do is to make that personal commitment to ageing healthy and gracefully.”
