Warning issued about rattlesnake sighting

Environment officials are investigating a report about a possible rattlesnake sighting, The Royal Gazette can confirm.

A government spokesman said the potential sighting made yesterday was understood to be in the area of Gibbs Hill Road in Southampton.

As of 7pm, no injuries had been reported.

The spokesman said authorities, including officers with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo, were investigating.

Anyone who believes they saw the reptile should immediately call 911.

If it can be done from a safe distance, people should keep sight of the snake until authorities arrive.

The public were urged not to attempt to approach, capture or harm the animal.

Sudden movements may provoke the reptile and should be avoided, the spokesman said.

Residents in the Gibbs Hill Road area were advised to avoid entering dense vegetation or reaching into areas where visibility was limited, such as beneath boards, inside pipes or in other enclosed spaces where a snake might be concealed.

Residents in the surrounding area were encouraged to remain vigilant and pet owners were asked to keep pets indoors or under close supervision until further notice.

The spokesman said nearby residents, first responders and healthcare services were being notified. Further updates will be provided.

According to Wikipedia, rattlesnakes are venomous snakes that live in a wide array of habitats, hunting small animals such as birds and rodents. There are 36 known species.

Rattlesnakes receive their name from the rattle located at the end of their tails, which makes a loud rattling noise when vibrated that deters predators. Rattlesnakes are the leading contributor to snakebite injuries in North America, but rarely bite unless provoked or threatened; if treated promptly, the bites are seldom fatal.
