Call for Up With People’s class of 1992

Talent on show: this year’s cast of Up With People performing. (Photograph supplied)

Dear Sir,

I am delighted to know that the musical group Up With People are once again visiting Bermuda, visiting schools and performing for the public.

I congratulate Up With People, as it encourages young people not only in their musical development but also as active members of the communities that they visit.

In addition to musical performances, the organisation has continued over the years to perform charitable deeds wherever they go.

I am a retired public school music teacher but remain very active in the music arena.

I recall Up With People’s very successful 1992 visit to Bermuda.

Like today, they were an active, energetic and charitable group.

The group management invited, through the Ministry of Education, chosen students from the schools to join the cast in performing in a free public concert held at Dockyard. They had an afternoon of practice and then an evening of a fun and joyful performance.

That was 24 years ago. At the time, I was the music teacher at West Pembroke Primary School and Primary 6 students were selected to perform.

I recall the experience fondly and hope that those students who performed do also.

Many of those students could be parents of school-aged children now and I encourage them to attend the concerts and share their Up With People experience with their children and friends. It would be interesting to hear from young Bermudians who remember their experience with Up With People in 1992 and were inspired musically through this experience.

It will remain a memorable occasion from my teaching career.

ELIZABETH ISAAC, Pembroke
