‘Education by celebration’ should be used to inspire

Much to celebrate: Clarence Hill, the only Bermudian in history to win a medal at an Olympic Games, has a moment at the Olympic Wall ceremony at the National Sports Centre (Photograph by Blaire Simmons)

Dear Sir,

After seeing the unveiling of the Olympic Wall of Fame at our National Sports Centre, I write this letter with just a tad of disappointment. Seeing that Clarence Hill is our only Olympic medal-winner, he should have a singular monument among them. This has become our greatest sporting achievement in our history and surely we can celebrate it as such.

Now, let’s take it up another notch. Former Miss World Gina Swainson’s and Hill’s photographs should be put up and hung just below our premiers in all our ports of entry. Not only there, but in our House of Assembly, post offices, City Hall, etc.

These two mega achievements happened only a few years apart, yet it has taken an enormous amount of years to give them their true, lifetime recognition.

“Education by Celebration” is a unique way that any society can prosper by.

What better way to showcase them to our fellow citizens, tourist and, most importantly, our future.

“Education by Celebration”.

Let’s use this motto to inspire.
