An outdoor bench painted purple, and a bright green exterior door, give arrivals at Bermuda’s newest clothing boutique a clear idea of what awaits them inside.

At X Girl Friend, which opens today on South Road next to the Paget traffic lights, entrepreneur Betty-Anne Burch has assembled a wide range of women’s fashions that together create an explosion of colour.

“We carry unique, colourful statement pieces, clothes that will make you stand out in a crowd, that will turn people’s heads and have them asking ‘where did you get that?’” Ms Burch said.

“Our clothes have a funky, retro, boho chic, eclectic vibe.

“We only carry two of an item, and sometimes only one of an item. You don’t have to worry about someone looking like you at an event. That would be a rarity.

“In Bermuda, there are not many shops where you can find different, unique clothing. Everyone wants to go somewhere and have something different.”

Ms Burch has degrees in merchandising, fashion design and business from the American College of Applied Arts in Atlanta. She co-owned a boutique of the same name some 17 years ago, but this time she’s the sole owner. In between, Ms Burch said she bartended “everywhere”.

X Girl Friend carries popular name brands from the United States and Europe in sizes ranging from small to extra large. The store carries hard-to-find petite fashions as well.

Pieces include shorts, jeans, dresses, club wear, summer track suits, sundresses, rompers and bathing suits, in a wide range of fabrics.

Ms Burch said: “We carry funky stuff — it’s Sixties, Seventies, Eighties and Nineties inspired, all different kind of things. People who’ve seen the store say they love the colours, the vibe, the look of the store. I wanted to create an ambience, something that looks different.

“People will want to enter the store because it looks interesting. They will want to shop because the clothes are interesting, and they will want to buy because the prices are good.”

Items in the store range in price from $20 to $200.

As for the store’s name, well, Ms Burch said it’s a long story. “Everyone’s an ex-girlfriend to somebody,” she said.

Outside the shop an inviting porch area has been set up with benches and seats.

“We are going to hold events on the porch,” Ms Burch said. “Fashion shows, chill vibe nights, we’ll make it a spot for creatives.”

X Girl Friend is open Monday through Saturday from 11am until 7pm. There is street parking on South Road, adjacent to the store
