Corbishley sworn in as police commissioner

Warm welcome: Wayne Caines, the Minister of National Security, with Commissioner of Police Stephen Corbishley and John Rankin, the Governor (Photograph supplied)

The new Commissioner of Police, Stephen Corbishley, was sworn into office yesterday by John Rankin, the Governor.

The ceremony at Government House was also attended by Wayne Caines, the Minister of National Security.

Mr Rankin welcomed the new Commissioner and his family to the island and thanked Paul Wright for his period as Acting Commissioner of Police and for his continued service to Bermuda.

Mr Corbishley said that he was excited and looking forward to getting to work with his new colleagues in the Bermuda Police Service.

He added: “I am both delighted and proud to be joining the Bermuda Police Service.

I am committed to protecting and serving the people of Bermuda as Commissioner of Police and to leading the Bermuda Police Service in maintaining the highest international standards.”

Mr Corbishley’s appointment prompted concerns in Parliament from Mr Caines, who questioned why “a suitably qualified Bermudian” had not been prepared for the role.

Mr Corbishley has previously served with Kent Police in Britain, and has held command positions in both operational and crime divisions in UK policing.

The new Commissioner brings a background of strategic experience, which includes his secondment to the National Crime Agency in the UK.
