Fire staff to do inspections by video

The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service announced today that it will now provide remote video inspections for building and construction sites. The video inspections, or RVI, will allows firefighters to conduct smaller routine inspections and tests without the need for a firefighter to be physically present. It will limit the risk to inspectors while also improving the efficiency of inspections. The inspection will be conducted by a fire inspector and a remote device operator, with the inspector instructing the operator where to position the remote device. The remote device operator must be a general contractor, building maintenance, alarm and systems technician or any other industry specific professional. If the signal is lost or interrupted at any point the inspection will be concluded and a physical inspection will be scheduled. The health and safety guidelines of social distancing and other protocols will be followed during this time.It is recommended that any buildings that seek a Tenant Fit Out Inspection, an Integrated Systems Test for fire alarms or suppression systems, or minor fire and life safety consultations should request an RVI.Class A buildings, or buildings that are less than 1,000 square feet, automatically apply for RVIs.Class B buildings, which are more than 1,000 square feet but less than 10,000, can apply for an RVI but the approval will be at the discretion of the inspector.Class C buildings, or buildings more than 10,000 square feet, and buildings with complex, multiple integrated systems do not need to apply. An RVI can be requested over e-mail at fireprotection@gov.bm, where a fire inspector will confirm the eligibility for an RVI and schedule a date and time.Verification of the location will also be confirmed before the inspection.Remote device operators will need a mobile device capable of transmitting video over the internet, as well as a reliable internet connection and software that can transmit a video signal, such as FaceTime or Whatsapp.Sign off and any official communications will be forwarded by e-mail to the applicant and the relevant government department before and after the inspection.
