Ebbin storms his way into top ten

Christian Ebbin produced his best showing so far at the Semana de Mar del Plata Regatta in Argentina yesterday to make up considerable ground in the standings.The Somersfield Academy student posted a 7-1-2-4 record and, after discarding his worst finish of 65th in the eight qualifying races held, surged to tenth in an overall fleet of 252 Optimist sailors.Ebbin’s victory in the sixth race was his second of the regatta, having also won the fourth race on Tuesday before bad weather brought racing to a grinding halt.The national Optimist boys’ champion is among a group of Royal Bermuda Youth Academy sailors competing in South American this week, which includes Magnus Ringsted, Nicole Stovell and Rachael Betschart.Ringsted sits in 28th with a trio of top-three finishes, including two seconds.Stovell is in 50th with four top-ten finishes and a best showing of sixth.Betschart is positioned in 68th with a top showing of eighth in the opening race of the qualifying series.The local sailors all competed at the championships last year, where Ebbin, Ringsted and Betschart qualified for the gold fleet and Stovell for the silver fleet.Ebbin was the island’s top performer, finishing fourth in the 78-strong gold fleet, while Ringsted and Betschart also held their own to finish 24th and 39th respectively. Stovell, the national girls’ Optimist champion, finished eighteenth in the silver fleet and 96th overall. Ebbin, Ringsted and Betschart are all making their third appearance and Stovell her second. Griggs Diemar, of the United States, held a one-point advantage over compatriot Charles Hackel at the top of the standings at the end of racing yesterday.The Semana de Mar del Plata Regatta is being organised by the Club Nautico Mar del Plata in conjunction with the Yacht Club Argentino and runs until Saturday.Bermuda sailor Chase Cooper won the regatta in 2013.
