Reeve Young hailed the collective spirit of his North Village side after they staged a thrilling late fightback to overcome Dandy Town 4-2 and clinch the Expansion Festive Cup crown at Goose Gosling Field last night.Village grabbed a third minute lead through Zewani Bowen only for Dionne Millett to level just six minutes later, before Judah Chapman put Town ahead a minute into the second half. However, with defeat looming, Justin Bell equalised with nine minutes remaining before Pierre Smith put his side ahead in the 87th minute. There was just enough time for Che’Kai Caisey-Zuill to score from a rebound, having seen his penalty saved in the closing seconds, to put the result beyond doubt and settle any lingering nerves. As the wild celebrations settled after the final whistle, Young heaped praise on his squad for the manner of their impressive comeback.“Hats off to Dandy Town, they brought the game to us and we had to dig deep at the end to pull off the victory,” he said.“All credit to my team, they kept playing until the very end and I’m so proud of them.“I always preach to the boys to never give up and I couldn’t have asked for any more from the entire squad.“This is our first trophy for a while at North Village and so it’s a proud moment for the club and for the community. This means so much, not only to us as a team, but the entire club and community.“This will be a springboard for us and so we have to keep working hard and try and bring further success in the future.“Kenny Thompson will keep a close eye on these boys, I’m sure he’ll be proud as well and you may well see some of them featuring in the first team in the near future.”While there was jubilation for Young and his squad, Aaron Denkins was left to rue Dandy Town’s profligacy in front of goal, having created an abundance of opportunities to see off their opponents.“It’s a tough defeat for us to take because this has really been the story of our season where we’ve dominated games, created chances but ultimately been punished,” he said.“We’ve spoken about belief and taking our chances when they come and had we taken a handful of those chances we would have won.“Football is a harsh lesson sometimes and these guys will have to take this one. It is a game of small margins and the difference is who takes their chances and puts the ball in the back of the net.”
