Anne Foster, a veteran lawyer specialising in reinsurance, has become the newest member of the Bermuda Bar.

In a ceremony before Ian Kawaley, the Chief Justice, Ms Foster was Called to the Bar by Jan Woloniecki, the head of litigation for ASW Law Limited, who described her addition to the island’s legal fraternity as “a testament to the quality of work in Bermuda”.

Graduating from Leicester University in the UK in 1991, Ms Foster was Called to the Bar of England and Wales by the Middle Temple in 1992. The court heard that she is also a solicitor in the Supreme Court of England and Wales, and practised as a solicitor until 2015 for the firm Clifford Chance LLP, followed by Hogan Lovells International LLP.

Mr Woloniecki, a friend of 20 years, said he had been grateful to “persuade her to move to Bermuda and leave the comforts of the big law firms”, telling Mr Justice Kawaley that “her only vice, if it be, is that she is a consummate perfectionist — she will help us to raise our game and our standards”.

She is also a keen supporter of Manchester United, the court heard. Noting the ambitious growth of the island as an offshore financial centre, with rigorous standards, Ms Foster told the court that the opportunity to play a part in its ongoing development was “something I am very much looking forward to”.
