Wells kept in cold by City’s first-half blitz

Nahki Wells was an unused substitute as Huddersfield Town were thrashed 5-1 by Manchester City in their FA Cup fifth-round replay yesterday at the Etihad Stadium.

However, the Sky Bet Championship promotion chasers gave the home side a scare when Harry Bunn gave them the lead after only seven minutes from a shot inside the penalty area.

The match was soon over as a contest after City scored three times in eight minutes late in the first half. Leroy Sané equalised on the half-hour before a Sergio Agüero penalty and a goal from right back Pablo Zabaleta gave them a 3-1 lead at the half. Agüero scored a second goal in the second half before substitute Kelechi Iheanacho closed out the scoring in stoppage time.

City manager Pep Guardiola’s decision to play a virtually full-strength team paid off, with his side outclassing their opponents, who made nine changes to their first team, obviously with Saturday’s crucial league fixture at home to Newcastle United in mind.

Both Wells and top scorer Elias Kachunga remained on the bench as manager David Wagner decided not to risk the pair in a losing cause.

The FA Cup could be City’s best chance of a trophy in Guardiola’s first season in charge. They lead Monaco 5-3 after the first leg of their round-of-16 tie in the Champions League and are in third place in the Premier League, 11 points behind leaders Chelsea.

Yesterday’s win sets up a quarter-final match against Middlesbrough on March 11, forcing City’s Premier League game against Stoke City, originally scheduled for that date, to be brought forward to next Wednesday.
